TIP 008: Declare war on plastic bags~
Eco-tips Reduce Waste
According to Worldwatch 4-5 trillion (that's 4.000.000.000.000 to 5.000.000.000.000) of plastic bags were used worldwide in 2002. They are an environmental hazard and we all need to make an extra effort to stop using them. According to earthsource, over 100,000 marine animals DIE every year from PLASTIC entanglement! More recently a dead whale washed away was found with over 800kg of plastic bags in its stomach.
By taxing plastic bag the Irish government has cut their use by 90% in three months. In Dutch and some French supermarkets they are just not available. Proof you can still shop!
Buy a canvas bag, a stylish wicker shopping basket. You can leave them in your car or carry them around. Even better invest in a trendy shopping trolley and go shopping without your car!
Do not buy plastic trash bags. Even if they decompose over time plastic bags are never fully biodegrade. Buy trash bags made of corn (such as Ecover's) that are biodegradable:

TIP 009: Recycle Batteries~
Eco-tips Reduce Waste
The average household uses 21 batteries a year. The UK generates 20,000 - 30,000 tonnes of waste general purpose batteries every year, but less than 1,000 tonnes are recycled. Whilst the exact chemical make-up varies from type to type, most batteries contain heavy metals, which are the main cause for environmental concern. When disposed of incorrectly, these heavy metals may leak into the ground polluting soil and water and endangering wildlife.

TIP 0016: Say "no" to disposable wipes~
Eco-tips Reduce Waste
With a profitable market estimated at US$5 billion sales worldwide disposable wipes are the new convenience. From cosmetics, baby wipes, to household cleaning products marketers have found new ways to make us spend more money and generate more waste.
If you want to limit your impact on the environment, avoid all disposable wipes. Not only do they contribute to landfills, but they also do not biodegrade easily and they contaminate the environment with the chemicals they contain.
Here are a few ecotips sent to us by Kim Wong:
A baby wipe are easily replaced by a damp washable cloth wipe.
Replace single use / throwaway dusters with a cotton duster. Microfibre dusters are OK but as they are synthetic they will not decompose very well afterwards. Best is to use hemp, which has a low environmental impact and is very durable so it will last longer than cotton. It is also extremely absorbent when used as a wet wipes on surfaces.
Avoid floor wipes and get a spray bottle to make your own low chemical solution and use a cloth wipes. A piece of Polyester fleece (polar fleece) cut to size, attracts dust by static, and will adequately replace a throwaway wipe.
Single use wash mitts for children are easily replaced by the old fashioned terry wash mitt!
