Piccalilly was set up in 2006 by Hannah Evans, an ex-graduate of the Royal College of Art. Hannah felt that there was a gap in the market for bright and modern ethical clothing and wanted to prove that you don’t have to compromise on style to care. Hannah spent much of 2006 sourcing suppliers and developing ranges for the launch of Piccalilly. Piccalilly now work with a range of suppliers from a large Calcutta based business who only use organic cotton, are fairtrade certified and they employ over 200 people in full time employment.

Piccalilly also work with a number of very small family run businesses who produce hand made products. These companies tend to use conventional cotton as they don’t have access to the limited supplies of organic cotton. Hannah places small repeat orders throughout the year with these businesses and sends regular advances to enable these suppliers to cash flow production of her garments.

Hannah sourced the makers of her fairy dresses on a trip to visit YKIP a charity she has supported for several years now – set up after the first Bali bomb and dedicated to helping educational and health needs of disadvantaged Balinese people and as a memorial to the many Balinese who lost their lives in the bomb. Hannah now sponsors the education of a girl who lost a parent in the bombing.

The makers of the dresses come from the area of Kuta where two bombings have occurred – the economic impact to Kuta and the rest of the Island has been huge. The small family run business hand-make the dresses in a small factory environment employing local women who are skilled in making garments. The quality of the dresses is unrivalled to similar products found on the high street. Hannah places regular repeat orders of the dresses throughout the year and also sends 50% advance towards every order that she places.
